Summer Camp:

Sunday - July 6 They made it to camp safely.
No details but I got  a message from Mr. Barrios saying that they had arrive safely at camp this afternoon.  I don't know if or when I will talk to them but if I do, I'll post details here.

Monday... here are a few photos from Mr. A who did a one day turnaround (click on thumbnail to view)

Monday afternoon.  I got a call from Mr. Barrios.  He said that camp was great and all were having fun.  There was a touch of rain overnight on Sunday but it was clear by the morning.   Weather report calls for night time temps in the low 50's and daytime highs in the low 70's.  Slight chance of scattered showers on Thu/Friday but pretty much PERFECT WEATHER!!!

Saturday
We are back.   A great time was had by everyone.  Watch here for photos.   If you have photos to share let me know.

Maquoketa Caves March 28-30
Troop 368 went to Maquoketa Caves near Maquoketa, Iowa. We got there at 10PM. It was dark and they had to set up their tents, with their only light being the moon, and a couple flashlights. In the morning, the troop went out to the caves. Matt Johnson said, “in one cave, you were pretty much swimming in the cave because it was almost flooded. Another was so high, that most scouts had to be lifted up, just to see inside! It probably got down to 20oF at night. People were pushing and being pushed into the water. It was very muddy at Maquoketa caves, and Tim Laubenstein got the muddiest award.” The troop left at 9 AM and got back home at 1PM Sunday.

Scout Day at Chicago Wolves Hockey  March 30
Immediately upon our return from Maquoketa, some of us got cleaned up and left for our second troop activity of the weekend.. Scout day at the Chicago Wolves Hockey Game.

February 23/ March 1 2008 - Scouting for Food
Scouting for Food (S.F.F.), was on two separate Saturdays. The first day, we passed out 147 bags with a note attached to it around the neighborhood surrounding Light of Christ Church.

On the second Saturday, we picked up all the bags loaded with non-perishable items. We counted the items, and tried to deliver them to the F.I.S.H. food pantry in Carpentersville but they were closed. Mr.. Torres volunteered to deliver all the food on the following Monday.  We collected 327 items in all!

January 26-27, 2008 - U.S.S Cobia
U.S.S. Cobia is a submarine, preserved at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI. We spent one night in the submarine. It was a 4 hour trip up, and we only made one stop, but it was worth it. There was a Cub Scout pack with us. When we got up there, we went to a pizza and arcade place just across the street. In the museum toured the submarine and watched a movie about the U.S.S Cobia. We viewed and entered the torpedo tubes. After that we acted out a drill when an enemy is spotted and we had to dive (not really) and rise back up. Later, we chose our sleeping quarters, and some people were lucky enough to get a captain's quarters while others had to sleep in the torpedo rooms, and loaded their stuff into it. Everyone (except Mr. Barrios) watched another movie in the Museum. At 2:00 AM we "accidentally" woke up Mr. Barrios reentering the submarine to sleep. We woke up at 7:30 AM and went to the gift shop for 1 HOUR! We finally left and went to McDonald's for breakfast. We got back home at 2:00 PM, and for once we arrived home early just in time for the Super bowl.

January 26, 2008 - Klondike Derby
Troop 368 participated in this year's, Klondike derby in McHenry. It was cold and there was snow. Three sleds participated in the events, under the flags of the Flying Squirrels, Great Goats, and Mustangs. We loaded our stuff into the sleds, and went to the events. There were many events including Iditarod, fire building, Frisbee golf, log cutting, "snake" throw, any many, many more events. We had a warm lunch of hot dogs, soup, chili, and hot chocolate. Some scouts even went sledding. Next, we did more events. At the end of the day, we were exhausted, but it was fun!

Merit Badge Counselors

We need Merit Badge Counselors !!   Earning Merit Badges is an exciting and important part of the scouting experience.    Before a scout can start working on a Merit Badge he needs two things:  a merit badge card signed by his Scoutmaster and a Merit Badge Counselor.  The Merit Badge Counselor's role is to guide and review the work that the boys do and insure that they satisfy the requirements of the badge. For more information about  what merit badge counselors do click here.

The process of becoming a merit badge counselor is as easy as 1-2-3.   First, select subject areas that you would feel comfortable teaching or counseling (click here for list).   Second, complete the merit badge counselor application form (click here for the form).  Third, if you are not a registered adult member of BSA you will need to fill out an adult registration form (click here for the form).  Oh...I guess there is a fourth thing.....drop the completed forms in the troop mailbox.

Scoutmaster Conferences & Boards of Review...Change of Policy

As our troop has grown it is getting difficult to spend enough time with our boys during Scoutmaster conferences and boards of review at our Monday meetings.    These are important parts of the scout experience and rank advancement and we want to do them justice.  As such, we would like to make a some changes in the way that we schedule them.

bulletOur first choice is to do Scoutmaster conferences and boards of review during our troop activities (campouts, etc).   This way we can spend as much time as we need with the scouts.
bulletScouts can contact Mr. Barrios and Mr. Soldner to set up times outside of our normal meetings and activities for conferences and boards of review.
bulletWe will continue doing conferences and boards at our Monday meetings but we will limit that to one at each meeting.  Mr. Barrios will keep a list of all of the boys who want Monday conferences on his calendar and we will take them on a first in - first out basis..
bulletAs Star, Life, and Eagle conferences take more time, we would ask those Scouts to try to use one of the first two options above if at all possible.
bulletIn addition, to this, we are going to set a cut-off date of two weeks before Court of Honor for all advancement to be complete and signed off in order to give us time to get all of the paperwork complete and the badges purchased.

Join Our Electronic Mailing List

Can't find that permission slip  that supposedly came home from the scout meeting?   Don't remember when or where  the next event is?   When is the money due for scout camp?  When can we start selling popcorn?    We will try to post the answers to all of those questions on this web site but in today's busy world I often appreciate an email reminder.   If you are the same sign up for the Troop 368 mailing list.

No....this is not an automated service and we will not spam you with tons of unwanted mail.  I will drop a periodic note to everyone on the mailing list to remind them of critical activities or dates for the troop.   If you would like to get on the mailing list click here and send us a note from the email account that you would like us to use.  Include scout's name in the text of the message as it is sometimes hard to identify you from your email address.     This list will not be shared with anybody else and will only be used by troop leadership for communications on  troop business.

Send Us Your Photos & Stories

We are preparing a troop photo album.  If you have pictures of any of our activities we would love to include them.  You can  email them to scouting@troop368.com  .  If you don't have digital photos bring the hard copies to one of our meetings and I will scan them in.    If you have a lot of digital photos you can burn them on a disk and bring them to a meeting.

Scouts....would you like to write a story and see it published on the web?   I am looking for stories to go along with the photos of our troop activities.   If you write it I will help you post it to the web.  This fulfils one of the requirements for the Communications Merit Badge.
